On a cold summer night, as Sally was heading for bed, she realises that she forgot her trusty camera outside!

After spending all day taking photos in Trapwater Beach's Grotto for tomorrow's picture contest, she hurriedly went home for dinner, with her camera and photos still in the caves! But hotheaded Sally isn't afraid of the dark! And so she goes to retrieve her belongings in secret. What she doesn't know, however, is that she may inadvertently awaken something that could put the whole world at risk...

After all, one should not roam near Trapwater's caves when midnight comes... Or so it goes. Sally doesn't care, she needs those photos!

Gameplay

I imagined the game would be simillar to older 2D Zeldas, where you'd go around and explore various themed environements, and using your camera's flash to blind your enemies before attacking them. I also imagined that all the game's event would happen throughout the night, so you'd start the game at around 10 PM, and by the final few scenes you'd be able to see the sunset.

Soundtrack

Here's a table with all the songs I made for this thing! I recommend reading the "Story" part as you listen to the soundtrack

Story

Old, Yellow Lights
This plays over the main menu, showing a wide view of the beach, waves gracefully going back and forth, while the lighthouse's vibrant beam loyally guides the ships back home. All types of critters crawl around the salmon sand, shining under the moonlinght... The night is peaceful, for now at least. One can appreciate that.
Little SallyAn intro cutscene plays introducing Sally to the player, as well as her main goal. Before she goes off, she "trains" by stabbing a sandbag modeled after someone that "grinds her gears" with a wooden sword. This is meant to be a tutorial that introduces basic movements and actions.
Trapwater BeachThe game's first area. While it's a pleasant tourist trap during the day, crustaceans and other hostile wildlife tend to show up during the night, so you'll need to be careful! Interesting objects can be found near the shore, brought by the waves, but that also means that your path can sometimes get blocked. Sally must make her way to the grotto quickly if she wants to find her camera!
A Moment of PeaceMiraculously, Sally finds her camera near the cave's entrance safe and sound, But no sign of the photos she's taken. Despite her shortcomings, she decides to take some time to look at the sea reflecting the nights' stars. Still dedicated to win the contest, and since she's outside anyway, Sally decides to delve into the grotto to find new pictures to take.
GrottoThe caves near Trapwater are famous for the beautiful stone structures found inside them: Almost man made, but not quite there, it has been a fascinating subject for many historians. However, many dangerous creatures make it their home during in the darkness of the night. If a foe proves too tough to beat with just her wooden sword, Sally can temporarily stun them with her camera's flash before attacking. Plus, it makes for some sweet new photos!

At what seems to be the end of the caves, Sally finds a statue representing a peculiar man. Thinking it looked freaky enough to win the contest, she decides to take a photo of it...
Calypso the GreatThe statue, was in fact, not.
From it emerges a figure shrouded in darkness. He announces himself as the king of the Dalmas, Calypso the Great, and soon enough, the king of the world!
Sally introduces herself in a simillar fashion, leaving him unimpressed.
Praising the girl's foolish curiosity, Calypso berates humanity, who had forgotten his people in these wretched caves, and aims to take revenge by shrouding the world in eternal darkness, and reign as its new ruler! Sally thinks it's kinda cool actually, but realising the implications of a world in "eternal darkness", she objects.
Calypso laughs, claiming that the prophecy fortold that only the legendary "Sinclair" could stop him, and throws Sally into a deeper part of the caves, so she can meet his subjects...
Lair of the DalmasSally's in quite the pickle: She's stuck in the deepest part of the caves, with a civilisation of shadowy figures who do not appreciate her for disrespecting their king! Thankfully, while creepy and powerful, they seem weak to the sudden white flash of the camera, so Sally knows what to do!

While most are hostiles, some of the figures are neutral towards her and are able to make conversation: The Dalmas are an ancient people, forgotten by history after being imprisoned by colonizers, they've since adapted and thrived in the darkness... But most are eager to get out in the world, and make other people like them.

Sally delves even deeper into the Dalmas' lair, looking for a way to exit, somehow...
Dalma CommandoWhat's this? A mirror? Or a door? Whatever it is, Sally knows that it must lead outside. It must be how the Dalmas were monitored before being forgotten, as it doesn't seem to have been used for quite a while.

But surprise! The door is guarded by an eccentric, armor equipped Dalma named Phylax, who will not get out of Sally's way! Due to his sheer size, he's more resistant to the flash than other Dalmas, but there must be a way to defeat him! Sally prepares herself for a tougher battle...

(This is a generic boss theme so it could play later)
Darker HometownSally finally manages to beat Phylax, and traverses the portal, finding herself in the town hall.

Scared, exhausted and kind of excited, Sally didn't have much time to rest as the Dalmas had already begun their invasion, shrouding the town's buildings in darkness and rendering the sleeping inhabitants into mindless drones, who then proceed to do the same with other inhabitants.

Sally, ridden by guilt, vows to stop this madness by... Well, she's not sure, but she's gonna beat the heck out of that stupid king! And thus she traverses the town, in hopes of reaching the beach again for pointers...
Enemy InfiltrationSally finally reaches the beach, figuring out that her camera flash can turn people back to normal (and thankfully, they're still asleep when turned back).

She catches a glimpse of Calypso and hides nearby. He compliments his subjects for their hard work, and heads to the lighthouse to enact his "master plan". Without a second thought, she heads there herself, but she must first traverse the Trapwater docks, which are now infested with Dalmas.
A Moment of HopeSally reaches the door to the lighthouse, and stressed out of her mind, loses her usual bravado for a bit. But as she looks at the starry sky again, she knows what she has to do.
The LighthouseShe climbs the lighthouse as the night draws its end.
Lord of DarknessAs Sally reaches the lighouse's lantern room, she finds Calypso gleefully laughing, as he was turning the light emanating from the bulb into concentrated dark energy. When he notices her presence, he looks over, impressed at her resolve, but confident he'd already won, as she is not the legendary "Sinclaire".

Sally calls him a stupid evil head, but he reveals that he and his people were once human, and if they're bound to unfairly live a life of darkness for the rest of times, then so does everyone else!

Sally draws her wooden sword, and prepares her camera.
The Grand Finale!Sally and Calypso fight for what they believe in.
Not ForgottenDespite his fighting experience, Calypso was still physically weak from years of dormancy, and yields the battle after they both fall into the sea.

Sally and Calypso sit on the sand, watching the sunset. He admits that he never really wanted things to go this far, and simply wanted what was best for his people, and let the world know of what happened to them. As strong as he was back then, he was still beaten and put under a spell, leading his subjects to fend for themselves in the caves.

Sally, still mad at him for what he did, calls him an idiot, but an idiot loved by his people, as the Dalmas were all cheering for the victory of their king during battle, even after his loss. (Well, as loud as silent figures could cheer anyway.)

While moved by the Dalmas, Calypso still laments that they will forever be forgotten by history.

Sally takes out her camera to show him all the pictures she's taken throughout her journey. While most are bad and blurry, she assures him that with those, she'll never forget them.

As silly as a child's promise can be, Calypso smiles, and accept her genuine affirmation, and tells his people to head back to the caves, which they've now accepted as their new home. For they'll be happy as long as they can stay with their king.

Before leaving, Calypso tells Sally that he's still perplexed at how he was beaten, as he had been told that the only one who could beat his uprising was the great "Sinclair". Sally then gives Calypso her camera: It was a basic, cheap machine that would not impress even him, but words could be seen written on its back: "Sinclair", the company responsible for buidling it.

Calypso laughs, as him and his people wave Sally goodbye.
Photo FinishSally ended up losing the contest to her sandbag's model, as he had taken beautiful pictures of... Himself?? Really?? How infuriating.

But it's not all bad, as whenever the night comes, Sally goes to Trapwater's grotto, to spend time with her new pals.

The game ends with a photo showing every character together.

You can also listen to this soundtrack on Soundcloud, Bandcamp or Youtube if you wish!

Edit: 3 weeks after the jam ended, I wanted to come back to this project for a bit and ended up making a new track: Sunday Sundae, which you can listen to on Soundcloud, Bandcamp and Youtube

This would play while exploring Sally's hometown during the day, before the main events of the game. I wanted to give it a more upbeat feel compared to the other tracks, since it happens during the day.
